Distribution of Natural Resources

Hanna Weijers (Ed.)

Many of the world’s poorest countries possess significant reserves of oil and other natural resources. Yet, numerous academic studies show that countries that are highly dependent on revenues from oil and other minerals score lower on the UN Human Development Index, exhibit greater corruption, have a greater probability of conflict in any five-year period, have larger shares of their population in poverty, devote a greater share of government spending to military spending, and are more authoritarian than those with more diverse sources of wealth. This is sometimes called the ‘resource curse’.

In this series, a complete overview of the various instruments dealing with the resource curse is being presented. The
collection is divided into several different volumes, providing wide-ranging insights in the resource curse, thus offering a valuable legal tool for academic collections. A complete overview of the published volumes is available at the publisher’s website.

Volume I in this series deals with the various actions taken by the United Nations and its bodies. Volume II deals with the two World Summits for Social Development, and Volume III contains the actions taken by financial institutions and other mechanisms established to stop the resource curse. Volume IV includes specific documents on the relation between natural resources and conflict situations in Africa. Several conflict situations, such as the conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast and Liberia, are included.
